Daily activity patterns of Saanen goats in the semi-arid northeast of Brazil R. Bras. Zootec.
Paulo,Jória Leilane de Albuquerque; Lopes,Fívia de Araújo.
The objective of the study was to characterize the daily feeding activity patterns of Saanen goats (Capra hircus) as a function of changes in climatic variables. The investigation was conducted in the municipality of Cruzeta, 300 km from the city of Natal, Brazil. Seventeen free-ranging female Saanen goats were selected for observation, wherein they were kept on a pasture with native vegetation and also received concentrated feed in a trough. Observational records of behavior on pasture were collected using focal animal and scan sampling for these specific behaviors: ruminating while standing or lying down, standing idly or lying down, walking, grazing and eating. Eating was the predominant activity observed. The frequency of some behaviors changed in...

Effects of heat stress on the physiological parameters and productivity of hair sheep in tropical and coastal environments R. Bras. Zootec.
Gesualdi Júnior,Antonio; Sales,Érika Sá Viana; Freitas,Rafael Souza; Henry,Fábio da Costa; Oliveira,Vicente de Paulo Santos de; Gesualdi,Ana Cristina Ladeira de Souza.
The experiment was carried out with sheep during the finishing phase in a partial confinement system to evaluate the following physiological parameters: rectal temperature (RT), respiratory rate (RR), heart rate (HR), productive performance and carcass characteristics. Fourteen uncastrated sheep with an average initial age of 90 days belonging to two genetic groups were used. There were seven Santa Inês animals, whose average initial live weight (ILW) was 23.65 kg, and seven F1 Dorper × St. Inês animals, with an ILW of 20.02 kg. The treatments were the two genetic groups and two times for the collection of the physiological parameters, at 09.00 h and 15.00 h. Evaluation took place once a week, in a shared stall, always following a 20-min grazing activity....

This study evaluated the influence of coat color on the heat tolerance and performance of 21 Santa Inês lambs, non-pregnant, non-lactating, seven animals of each coat color: black, brown and white, with an average initial weight of 25.71, 24.85 and 25.00 kg, for white, brown and black animals, respectively, and 12 months of age. The study was conducted during summer in the agreste region of Pernambuco State, Brazil. Twenty-one sheeps were assigned to a completely randomized design with three treatments and seven replicates. The heat tolerance index and the animal performance were evaluated once a week for eight weeks. White sheep were slightly superior in heat tolerance to brown and black sheep, 88.3, 85.5 and 86.6 respectively, but this was not...

Hormonal changes in female buffaloes under shading in tropical climate of Eastern Amazon, Brazil R. Bras. Zootec.
Silva,Jamile Andréa Rodrigues da; Araújo,Airton Alencar de; Lourenço Júnior,José de Brito; Santos,Núbia de Fátima Alves dos; Viana,Rinaldo Batista; Garcia,Alexandre Rossetto; Rondina,Davide; Grise,Márcia Mascarenhas.
The hormonal responses of 20 female buffaloes raised under the sun (SS group) or in the shade (CS group) in Belém, Pará, Brazil, were assessed. The CS group (n = 10) was kept in a silvopasture system featuring Racosperma mangium, whereas the SS group (n = 10) was kept in paddocks without shade featuring Brachiaria humidicola, drinking water, and mineral salt. The following parameters were measured for each treatment: dry-bulb temperature (AT), relative humidity (RH), and black-globe temperature in order to calculate the globe temperature and humidity index (GTHI). Blood sample collections to quantitatively determine levels of cortisol, triiodothyronine (T3), and thyroxine (T4) were performed every 14 days, at 13.00 h. Different seasons of the year were...

Morphometrical development of tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum, Cuvier, 1818) under different photoperiods R. Bras. Zootec.
Mendonça,Pedro Pierro; Vidal Junior,Manuel Vazquez; Polese,Marcelo Fanttini; Santos,Monique Virães Barbosa dos; Rezende,Fabrício Pereira; Andrade,Dalcio Ricardo de.
The experiment was performed with 160 tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum) with average weight 11.01±2.08 g and total length 7.8±0.18 cm. Fishes were kept in sixteen aquariums with 56 L of water at 29.1±0.4 ºC of temperature, initial stocking density 1.97 g/L and constant aeration. The objective of this study was to assess the influence of photoperiod on fish performance. Treatments consisted of four photoperiods: T1 = 6 hours; T2 = 12 hours; T3 = 18 hours and T4 = 24 hours, with four replicates each. Fishes were fed twice a day with commercial extruded feed (28% of crude protein). The experiment was developed in closed circulation system, with volume of water renewal for each experimental unit equivalent to 40 times daily. Fish biometry was performed at the...

Physiological responses and animal behavior in Bonsmara-Hereford crosses vs. Hereford purebred on environment stress Scientia Agricola
Taborda,Paula Alicia Batista; Saravia,Celmira Tomasina; Espasandin,Ana Carolina.
ABSTRACT: Adaptative traits (rectal temperature-RT, respiratory rate-RR) and grazing behavior (Grazing, Ruminating and Rest time, and Sun or Shade time) of Bonsmara-Hereford crossbred-BH, n = 15, and purebred Hereford-HH, n = 18, yearling heifers, in a grazing system of Uruguay. Environment characterization was made using THIadjusted by radiation and wind speed (no, mild, and severe heat weaves), and the comprehensive climatic index-CCI (no, middle, moderate and severe stress). Adaptative traits were measured twice a day, weekly, in two consecutive days in summer and winter at 08h00 and 16h00. Grazing behavior was observed from 07h00 to 21h00 each 600 s twice in summer. The records were analyzed using a mixed model. Significant effect of genotype was...

Thermal comfort index and infrared temperatures for lambs subjected to different environmental conditions Scientia Agricola
Paim,Tiago do Prado; Martins,Rafhael Felipe Saraiva; Cardoso,Cyntia; Dallago,Bruno; Louvandini,Helder; McManus,Concepta.
There is an abundance of thermal indices with different input parameters and applicabilities. Infrared thermography is a promising technique for evaluating the response of animals to the environment and differentiating between genetic groups. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate superficial body temperatures of lambs from three genetic groups under different environmental conditions, correlating these with thermal comfort indices. Forty lambs (18 males and 22 females) from three genetic groups (Santa Inês, Ile de France × Santa Inês and Dorper × Santa Inês) were exposed to three climatic conditions: open air, housed and artificial heating. Infrared thermal images were taken weekly at 6h, 12h and 21h at the neck, front flank, rear flank, rump, nose,...
